25 September 2025 – Antwerpen/Düsseldorf/Rüsselsheim: VGP, a pan-European developer, manager and owner of high-quality logistics and semi-industrial real estate as well as a provider of renewable energy solutions, today broke ground on the “grEEn campus” at VGP Park Rüsselsheim. The new Stellantis Germany and global Opel headquarters are being built on the site along Mainzer Straße. Together with Patrick Burghardt, Mayor of the City of Rüsselsheim, City Planning Councilor Simon Valerius, Opel & Vauxhall CEO and Stellantis Germany Managing Director Florian Huettl, and other guests, Jan Van Geet, CEO of VGP, and VGP Germany Managing Directors Darius Scheible and Daniel Sigmann highlighted the importance of the project on site. Construction work has already begun, and today’s groundbreaking marks the symbolic start.

On a site covering approximately 100,000 square meters, VGP is developing the “grEEn campus” for Stellantis. It will include an office building with approx. 22,500 square meters, a research and development building with a design center covering around 28,800 square meters, as well as parking facilities with 54,800 square meters. The Opel Global and Stellantis Germany headquarters, located in the office building, will provide state-of-the-art workplaces designed for flexible working and collaborative cooperation. The research and development building and design center will be home to prototype development and the creation of the latest vehicle designs.

The entire campus aims for at least DGNB Gold certification, which recognizes particularly sustainable buildings. VGP is placing a special emphasis on reducing CO2 emissions during the construction phase (embodied carbon). In addition, sustainable building materials are being used to ensure good indoor air quality. Energy will be supplied by a photovoltaic system integrated into a green roof. This not only supports biodiversity but also creates a pleasant microclimate and helps cool the building, supported by a near-surface geothermal system.

VGP CEO Jan Van Geet says: “We are delighted to lay the foundation for a state-of-the-art and sustainable corporate location together with Stellantis through the groundbreaking ceremony for the grEEn campus in Rüsselsheim. The new campus is being built on the historic Opel production site and exemplifies our philosophy of developing flexible, tailor-made, high-quality solutions, that are perfectly integrated into the existing environment and oriented toward climate neutrality.”

Florian Huettl, CEO Opel & Vauxhall and Managing Director Stellantis Germany, says: “With the groundbreaking for the grEEn campus, we are contributing to sustainable development in Germany. Here and now, at our traditional site, we are building a forward-looking center for innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. Together with VGP, we are creating a modern environment for Opel and Stellantis Germany employees and realizing a pioneering project for the future of Opel and Stellantis.”

Patrick Burghardt, Mayor of the City of Rüsselsheim, underlined the importance of the project: “The grEEn campus is a strong commitment to the location and to sustainable development. It shows the potential that Rüsselsheim holds: for existing and new jobs, for innovation, and for a strong economic future.” City Planning Councilor Simon Valerius also assessed the project positively from an urban development perspective: “The grEEn campus demonstrates what tomorrow’s commercial urban design can look like – resource-efficient, architecturally ambitious, and with a clear upgrade of the western city entrance. The site is also the starting point for the vast areas VGP is currently developing.”

In fall 2023, VGP acquired around 700,000 square meters on Mainzer Straße and Bundesstraße 43 in Rüsselsheim. The three properties represent the company’s largest brownfield project to date. Beside building the campus for Opel, VGP develops at VGP Park Rüsselsheim tailormade solutions for industrial companies and small and medium-sized value-added businesses for which it currently has already some very advanced ongoing negotiations. VGP acts with care and in close coordination with the relevant authorities to maximize the benefits for the city of Rüsselsheim and the region.
