LOGO DPD

When DPD ordered, we delivered the parcel.

With VGP Park Loures, we delivered a logistics facility engineered to maximise proximity. As consumers demand ever-faster processing, the site’s location in Santo António de Cavaleiros brings its unique sorting machine right to the doorstep of Lisbon.

Challenge

First time – last mile

As it broke ground in 2022, VGP Park Loures posed a double challenge. Next to marking VGP’s first entry into the Lisbon area, it also inaugurated a new and complex project: Last Mile logistics. Located in one of the best areas of Greater Lisbon, our Portuguese flagship park showcases our client’s status as a market leader.

Building the infrastructure that sustains both operational and corporate demands requires specific and technically demanding features. Most notably, the 9,000 m² distribution centre needed to be built without internal pillars to enable automated parcel sorters to fulfil their role smoothly. The free span of 46 metres necessitated oversized structural elements requiring special transportation and specific reinforcements to absorb the seismic loads of the area.

From traffic flows to mezzanines: a complex puzzle

On top of this, the facility needed to serve a variety of purposes: Next to 3,000 m² of office space for the Portuguese headquarters, it needed to have more than 30 truck loading docks and over 90 van loading docks. More than 100 parking spaces for light vehicles and 50 van-sized ones complete the picture of a site well-equipped to capitalize on its strategic location. However, this coexistence could only be delivered based on careful studies of traffic flows ensuring safety and efficiency for all participants.

Contributing to the architectural complexities of the specialized warehouse was the demand to integrate office spaces into structure. That required us to insert a mezzanine into the building, allowing employees to constantly monitor operations through windows oriented inwards.

VGP's Response

Positioned for Lisbon, prepared for tomorrow

By meeting all technical, spatial, and logistical criteria, VGP Park Loures fulfilled its goal of being the ideal location for DPD’s demands. On 9,000 m², the pillar-free warehouse ensures full operational efficiency for automated sorting systems. The wide variety of docks and parking spaces as well as the integrated office area enable tapping the full potential of the strategic location. Through its direct access to major highways and proximity to Lisbon’s city centre, it maximises the efficiency of DPD’s last-mile delivery.

Sustainability as common thread

Another positive effect of the ideal location is that it allows for improved service coverage of DPD’s electric fleet across the Lisbon metropolitan area. Capable of supporting a 100% electrical distribution fleet, it anticipates the future of urban logistics. Photovoltaic panels across the rooftop ensure the electrification of our client’s fleet and serves the reduction of its carbon footprint. Reflecting VGP’s commitment to highest technical, environmental, and social standards, this equips the site with the necessary features for achieving a BREEAM Excellent certification.
