Zalando

LOGO NO

When Zalando needed a new fit, we dressed them up properly.

Our new 130,000 m² fulfilment centre reinforces Zalando’s fabric of domestic and European logistics facilities. As an international online retailer, Zalando now benefits from a tailor-made addition to its domestic and continental infrastructure. Seamlessly integrated into VGP’s ecosystem of logistics centres, the facility is a perfect fit within Zalando’s forward-looking supply chain.

Challenge

Stitching together timelines, talks, and targets

To support Zalando’s European expansion, the new facility needed to seamlessly integrate into their existing distribution network. Our task: delivering a future-proof solution tailored to their logistics needs and ambitious growth strategy. That implied aligning closely with the Group’s stakeholders, requiring several rounds of talks and discussions and reconciling these with the aim of achieving DGNB Platinum status.

On top of this, several organisational challenges had to be mastered. As Zalando’s unique requirements deviated from our usual procedures, we had to adapt the conveyor technology accordingly while sticking to the comparatively short construction period. Also, the work needed to take place amid ongoing operations at the site. Because public dialogue sits at the core of VGP’s identity, we scaled up our stakeholder engagement to meet heightened demand for it.

VGP's Response

A seamless weave of speed and care

The new facility was developed at a prime location with direct access to the motorway. Positioned near the densely populated Rhein-Main metropolitan region, it brings Zalando even closer to its customers – ensuring fast, efficient last-mile delivery across central Germany. Corridor bridges between the individual buildings, including the parking garage, enable applying the same efficiency to internal movement. In line with this, we were able to stick to the short construction period and finish the project in time.

Employee well-being enjoys highest priority at Zalando. Hence, we have installed EV chargers for cars and bikes, and introduced family support measures. These include parking spaces, breastfeeding rooms, and baby changing facilities. Staff can also nourish their bodies and souls in the prayer room, the canteen, or on the furnished roof terrace.

Sustainability as common thread

The project incorporates diverse sustainability measures. Instead of gas, approx. 9 MWp of rooftop solar power capacity let heat pumps provide heating or cooling, with mechanical ventilation ensuring enhanced indoor air quality. Next to green rooftops and façades, special lamps and wall paint support bird protection and reduce light pollution.

A case study for sustainable water management, the project comes with rainwater harvesting and usage, water-saving features, and stormwater management as well as ground water protection. Captured rainwater supports water reductions in sanitary installations and greenery.
